Schedule Reliability Decreased to 68.8% in August 2017

CargoSmart analyzes schedule reliability each month to provide shippers and logistics service providers with insights about their ocean carriers’ performance. This month, we reviewed the schedule reliability of 24 ocean carriers across 12 trade lanes. Overall, on-time schedule reliability decreased by 1.1%, from 69.9% in July 2017 to 68.8% in August 2017.

Regarding schedule reliability by trade, half of the 12 trades declined from July 2017 to August 2017. The Europe-Oceania trade experienced the largest decrement in reliability, decreasing by 45.4%, from 79.1% in July 2017 to 33.7% in August 2017. The trans-Atlantic trade experienced the largest improvement in reliability, increasing by 11.0% from 61.7% in July 2017 to 72.7% in August 2017. The North America-Oceania trade continued to have the highest reliability with 90.9% in August 2017.

From the vessel discharging region perspective, the Oceania region experienced the largest decrement in reliability, decreasing by 13.7%, from 86.6% in July 2017 to 72.9% in August 2017. While the Oceania region ranked the highest in the previous three months, the reliability in August was impacted by severe winter storms. The South Asia region had the highest reliability with 79.8% in August 2017. Africa had the lowest reliability of 31.2% in August 2017.

16 of the 24 carriers experienced varying degrees of declining schedule reliability from July 2017 to August 2017. The top five most reliable carriers in August 2017 were MCC, CCNI, OOCL, Evergreen, and Wan Hai with an average on-time performance of 82.4%, 79.0%, 78.2%, 76.2%, and 74.6% respectively.
